surrendering all

opaque and bleak dreams

malleable to the wills

of common lovers and liars;

respect demanded, but never earned

love extracted, and never reciprocated

our vessels empty, like dry bones

until we gave up all that we had not

surrendered ourselves

laid it all down

our burdens beneath us

crowns trampled at our feet

humbled,

poured out to be refilled,

revived,

loved.
